Introduction

Jarrow-Online aims to educate, revive peoples memories and bring people together by sharing present day and historical information of the town of Jarrow. The town is located approximately eight miles up from the mouth of the south bank of the river Tyne.

The town is very rich in history it derrives its name from the saxon word "Gyrwe" that has the meaning of "marsh" or "fen". The beginnings of the town consisted a small church and a few houses, the church has had a significant role in the spread of Christianity, one of its most famous scholars being the Venerable Bede.

Jarrow stayed of a minor size for several centuries very slowly growing with a more rapid growth in the last two or three centuries with the introduction of heavy industry such as coal mining, shipbuilding
